Language Arts Challenge of the Day 1

Students in my first and second group can answer the following questions. Everyone who answers the question correctly will receive a ticket, however, one lucky person from each class, who answers the questions correctly, will receive ten tickets. You must answer both questions correctly in order to be eligible to win. Please answer the questions by commenting to this post.

1. What is the direct object in the following sentence?
  • Mary burnt the toast before breakfast.
2. What is the predicate adjective in the following sentence?
  • The garbage on the street smells bad.

HINT: A direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of a verb or shows the result of the action. It answers the question "What?" or "Whom?" after an action verb. / A predicate adjective follows a linking verb and tells us something about the subject.
