Students, parents invited to Open House on Aug. 4

from Griffin Daily News

The Griffin-Spalding County School System will hold its annual Open House on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. at all of its 18 schools in preparation for the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year on Aug. 8.

Attendance is voluntary and registration is not required, but parents should bring a pen and paper for taking notes as well as appropriate documents if they intend to register their child that day, said Elizabeth Benz, communications specialist with the school system.

During Open House, parents can meet teachers and administrators, learn about school bus routes and school attendance zones, review student information and update contact phone numbers, go over medication needs of their child with the school nurse and create an Infinite Campus account on school computers that will later allow them to view their child’s grades online.

Parents are also encouraged to fill out a questionnaire that will help the school system better serve parents. In addition, parents of elementary school students can use Open House to register their child for the elementary after-school program at the schools that offer such a program — in which case, they must bring a registration fee of $10 per child.

The benefit of students coming to their schools’ Open House is that they can familiarize themselves with their teachers and the school itself.

“Everybody is available during Open House,” Benz said. “Open House gives both the parent and the student the opportunity to get to know their teacher and find out what to bring to school to be successful. Think of it as a one-stop shop to get ready for the school year.”
