Happy Birthday Mark Twain

Today would be Mark Twain's 176th birthday. In celebration of this day, here is one of his most famous short stories. I hope you enjoy.

"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County"
by Mark Twain

In compliance with the request of a friend of mine, who wrote me from the East, I called on good-natured, garrulous old Simon Wheeler, and inquired after my friend's friend, Leonidas W. Smiley, as requested to do, and I hereunto append the result. I have a lurking suspicion that Leonidas W. Smiley is a myth; that my friend never knew such a personage; and that he only conjectured that, if I asked old Wheeler about him, it would remind him of his infamous Jim Smiley, and he would go to work and bore me nearly to death with some infernal reminiscence of him as long and tedious as it should be useless to me. If that was the design, it certainly succeeded.

I found Simon Wheeler dozing comfortably by the bar-room stove of the old, dilapidated tavern in the ancient mining camp of Angel's, and I noticed that he was fat and bald-headed, and had an expression of winning gentleness and simplicity upon his tranquil countenance. He roused up and gave me good-day. I told him a friend of mine had commissioned me to make some inquiries about a cherished companion of his boyhood named Leonidas W. Smiley Rev. Leonidas W. Smiley a young minister of the Gospel, who he had heard was at one time a resident of Angel's Camp. I added that, if Mr. Wheeler could tell me any thing about this Rev. Leonidas W. Smiley, I would feel under many obligations to him.

"Thank You, M'am" by Langston Hughes

In leaving for Thanksgiving Break, students had to read the short story "Thank You, M'am" by Langston Hughes and then in groups complete various mini-projects on the story. Here are the stand-outs from those projects.

Reading Log

Starting this week, students are required to read 100 pages a week from a book of their choice. The books were approved by myself in our latest trip to the library. They will be receiving copies of this Reading Log on Wednesday, November 2nd. They will turn this log in every Friday, it will be checked, and given back to them on the same day. It must be signed by a parent / guardian each week as well, so please make sure to sign it so they get credit for their hard work.

If they lose their log, they can simply print out a copy from it here. If they are absent on Friday, they will need to turn it in on Monday, or the first day they return from their absence.

Classroom Policy

If a student receives an "F" on any assignment, then they must take the paper home to be signed, and return it the next day. If a student fails to bring their assignments back signed, they will receive a Loss as a result of it. In the event a student loses the assignment, I will accept a note from the parent, as long as the grade is listed on the note. The note must be on a separate piece of paper, and not written in the agenda.

Thank you very much.

The Phantom Tollbooth Chapter 1-12 Study Guide

Milo, a very bored little boy, receives an unusual package one day: a make- believe tollbooth. When he drives through it in his electric toy car, he is suddenly transported to the Lands Beyond, a fantastic world of imagination. On his way to Dictionopolis, one of the country's two capitals, he meets Tock, the watchdog who joins him on his journey. In Dictionopolis, Milo meets King Azaz who presides over the world of letters and words. Azaz sends Milo on a mission to rescue two princesses, Rhyme and Reason, who are imprisoned in the Castle in the Air, which floats hundreds of feet off the ground. Milo and Tock leave Dictionopolis with a new companion, the Humbug, whom Azaz has sent along as a guide. The three head toward Digitopolis where they hope to persuade the Mathemagician to release the princesses.
